Frequently Asked Questions

How are crypto exchange fees calculated?+
Most exchanges charge a percentage of each trade's notional value. For example, a 0.10% fee on a $10,000 trade costs $10. Since fees apply on both entry and exit, a round-trip trade costs double. Limit orders that sit on the book generally incur lower fees than market orders that execute immediately.
What's the difference between maker and taker fees?+
When your order rests on the book waiting to be matched — like a limit buy below the current price — you are 'making' the market, and the exchange rewards you with a lower fee. When your order fills instantly against existing orders — like a market buy — you are 'taking' liquidity, and the fee is higher. Since most beginners default to market orders, this calculator uses taker fees as the starting assumption.
Why do fees matter so much?+
Fees compound over time. A trader making 20 trades/month with $10,000 volume pays $240/year at 0.10% but $1,440/year at 0.60%. That's $1,200/year in unnecessary costs — money that could be invested or used as margin. Choosing a low-fee exchange is one of the easiest ways to improve returns.
Are futures trading fees lower than spot fees?+
Yes, significantly. Futures taker fees are typically 0.05% vs 0.10% for spot. This is because futures trading generates higher volume and exchanges compete aggressively on derivatives fees. However, futures also involve funding rate costs which are not included in this calculator.
Do any exchanges offer zero-fee trading?+
Some exchanges offer zero-fee promotions on specific pairs or for new users, but no major exchange offers permanent zero-fee trading across all pairs. The closest is Binance at 0.10% spot with additional BNB fee discounts (25% off), and OKX at 0.08% maker fees for spot trading.
